Phragmites Control in Ontario

What Is Invasive Phragmites?

Invasive Phragmites (Phragmites australis subsp. australis), also called European Common Reed, is a tall perennial grass that forms dense stands in wetlands, ditches, shorelines and other wet or disturbed ground. Stands commonly reach three to five metres in height and can persist for many years in the same location.

Ontario also has a native subspecies of Phragmites, and distinguishing the two matters. The invasive subspecies typically forms much denser stands with little other vegetation growing among the stems, has blue-green leaves during the growing season, tan or beige stems that persist through winter, and large dense seed heads. Native Phragmites tends to grow in sparser mixed stands with reddish stems and more open seed heads. Accurate identification is the first step of any control program, because treating native stands is both unnecessary and damaging.

Why Is Phragmites a Problem?

Dense invasive Phragmites stands crowd out native wetland vegetation. As a stand thickens, the plants below it are shaded out and the accumulated dead stems and litter suppress seed germination, so the plant community that once occupied the site does not return on its own.

The consequences extend beyond plants. Wetland habitat structure changes, which affects the marsh birds, amphibians and other wildlife that depend on more varied vegetation. Along roads, dense stands block sightlines and interfere with ditch drainage. On shorelines, they obstruct water access and views.

Where Does It Commonly Grow?

Invasive Phragmites is strongly associated with wet, disturbed ground. In Ontario it is widespread along roadside ditches, which combine standing water, periodic disturbance from maintenance activity, and constant traffic to move plant material along the corridor.

It also establishes in marshes and wet meadows, along lake and river shorelines, in stormwater management ponds, on the margins of construction and aggregate sites, and in low-lying areas of agricultural and industrial land.

How Is Phragmites Controlled?

Phragmites spreads both by seed and, more importantly for an established stand, by rhizomes and above-ground stolons. A mature stand is effectively a connected network with substantial resources stored below ground, which is why cutting or mowing alone generally does not control it. Cutting removes the visible stand and the plant regrows from reserves; mechanical work can also carry viable fragments to new locations.

Effective programs are usually multi-year and combine methods. Where herbicide treatment is appropriate and permitted for the site, it is timed to the period when the plant is transporting resources downward into the rhizome system, which in Ontario generally falls in late summer to early autumn. Removal of standing dead biomass after treatment is sometimes carried out so that light reaches the soil and native vegetation can re-establish.

Any work in or near water carries additional regulatory requirements and product restrictions. What can be done on a specific stand depends on where it is, what is around it and which requirements apply, which is determined during assessment rather than assumed.

Method selection depends on the size of the stand, its location relative to water, the presence of native vegetation worth protecting, and site access.

  • Selective spot and backpack application in mixed or sensitive vegetation
  • Broader application where a stand is a dense monoculture and the site allows it
  • Cut-and-treat approaches on specific sites where they suit the conditions
  • Post-treatment biomass management to reduce litter and open the site to light
  • Staged treatment of large stands across multiple seasons
  • Containment-focused treatment of the leading edge to stop expansion first

Why Timing Matters

Timing is the single most common reason Phragmites treatments fail. Treatment applied when the plant is putting energy into above-ground growth may kill the visible stems while leaving the rhizome network largely intact, and the stand returns the following season looking much as it did before.

Treating during the period when resources are moving into the rhizomes allows the treatment to reach the part of the plant that actually sustains the stand. Field conditions, water levels and weather also constrain the window, so scheduling is planned rather than opportunistic.

Monitoring and Follow-Up

A single season of treatment on an established stand should be expected to reduce it, not eliminate it. Rhizome fragments survive, seed remains in the soil, and adjacent untreated stands provide a source of reinvasion.

Follow-up assessment identifies regrowth while it is still small and inexpensive to address, and tracks whether native vegetation is returning to the treated area. Sites next to untreated stands, particularly along a shared ditch or shoreline, generally need ongoing attention rather than a one-time project.
